As such so many names now resonate across the globe: Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim, Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Carlinhos Brown, Oscar Niemeyer, Glauber Rocha, Mario de Andrade, Hélio Oiticica, Vinicius de Morais, Machado de Assis, as well as Ronaldinho, Pelé, Guga, Popó, Ayrton Senna, or even Giselle Bundchen, but also Zumbi dos Palmares, Chico Rei, Lampião, Tiradentes, Chico Mendes, Paulo Freire, and many, many more! Let's not forget the Capoeira dance/martial art that is now booming the world over. Or the most famous carnival on the planet and so many other festive events that punctuate the Brazilian year and attract both national and international crowds.
It wouldn't be surprising if it is one of these names that one day brought for the first time your attention to Brazil. Although it is now quite remote in time, I still keep a clear memory of Jorge Benjor's "Filho Maravilha" playing loudly on my father's turntable, and I haven't a single doubt that the unique rhythm and strangely melodious lyrics of the song had instilled in me the beginning of a passion for Brazil that would never stop.
